New year. Same resolutions broken in a matter of days. Dry January, get fit, read more. Do more. Be more – it’s overwhelming to say the least. Things always start off the same way, I start off determined then I lose momentum and have usually abandoned my goals within a couple of weeks. Well this year it feels good to relieve myself of the intense pressure that the beginning of a new decade can bring and do things a bit differently. No more pressure, no more strict guidelines and no more convincing myself that I can’t do something before I’ve even tried. This time I’m setting small daily intentions instead of soon-to-be-forgotten resolutions.
- Go outside and go for a walk every day (long or short) – I’ve seen Gem Morson talk about this on her socials since the beginning of January and how much walking has helped her mental health. So far this couldn’t be more true! Nothing beats the mind clearing magic of going for a walk outside when my head feels cloudy.
- Turn off notifications before bed and wind down without unhealthy distractions.
- Stop scrolling in the morning – instead of reaching for my phone and checking Instagram as soon as I wake up, take that time to practice self-reflection and positive affirmations over a morning coffee.
- Write down what I’m thankful for – sometimes the chaos from a day can make me forget what I’m grateful for. It feels good to look back at how far I’ve come when negative thinking tries to convince me that I’m not good enough.
- Remember my values – concentrate on the things I truly care about and how I can incorporate more of what I love to do in my day.
- Be more open – open to change and new opportunities.
- Be present – put my phone away and give each task or person my full attention.
- Mix it up in the kitchen – try exciting, new recipes and cook myself fresh feel-good foods.
- Be kinder to myself – OK Dry January was a bust. But that doesn’t mean I have to go back to drinking every night. Why not stick to weekends!
- Check in with myself – revisit my intentions and reflect on how they make me feel. If it’s negative, it’s time to switch it up again.
- Be me – my journey is my own, there’s no need for comparison.
- Remember to take deep breaths…
For the first time in a while, I feel good about this New Year. This time round there’s no pressure, no strict deadlines. Some of us take a bit longer to get in the swing of things and that’s OK. So if that’s you, lets just take it day by day shall we?
